Russian River

We stayed on the Russian River for a long fourth of July weekend with friends and spent a fair bit of time on the river. Riley fared well, especially with her inflatable sun shade float! We took her drifting down the river–quite an adventure, even though the water was barely moving and at times only 6″ deep. All that relaxing can get pretty tiring, though…. time for a nap!

yum… peas and carrots…

Riley’s eating solids! Well, purreed solids. She’s getting the hang of eating with a spoon. Sometimes she likes to help.

Girls can play too!

My brother Eric has always maintained that girls can’t play soccer… or any sport really. But after getting to know Riley and seeing how active she is and how much she likes to kick… well I guess he changed his mind. So he bought her an Arsenal jersey (his favorite team) and now maintains she’ll somedayplay for their women’s team…

Buckle up, here she comes!

Camp Out!

Riley went on her first camping trip this weekend! We were up in Ashland for my 10 year high school reunion (yikes!) and spent a night up and Squaw Lake with a few people the following night. Riley had a pretty good time, despite having a bit of a cold. Here she’s sporting her Camp Out outfit from Houston and Taylor.

The trip gave us an opportunity to finally try out the backpack baby carrier thinger (the “Wanderer”) that Eagle hooked us up with for Riley’s baby shower. It’s great! She has more room to move around than in the Bjorn, and there are some loops we can hook her toys through so that she has something to play with.

A new friend

Riley and Leo are getting along pretty well these days. Which is a little surprising, considering that Riley really likes to grab things (and put them in her mouth), and each time she pets him she comes back with a fist full of black cat hair. Leo seems to tolerate it very well! (He a bit attention starved these days.)

Going legit

It’s official!

mmm… rice cereal

So the pediatrician said when Riley stops sleeping through the night, it’s time to start the rice cereal. Well, that time has finally come. We bought some special rubber tipped spoons and mixed up some cereal with warm milk and got Riley in a good eating position… then proceeded to get cereal pretty much everywhere but in her stomach. well maybe she swallowed a little bit. But mostly she either inhalded it (there was a lot of protracted couging and choking, oopsie) or blew it off the spoon or just let it dribble down her chin into the many folds of her neck. Luckily my father had the bright suggestion to just put it in a bottle and make the bottle nipple bigger. After a few tries we found the right size, and now Riley will get a bottle of rice cereal milk everynight before bed. fun fun.

Mad bottle skillz!

Riley can feed herself! It will likely be a little while yet before she’s fully self-sufficient, but she is on her way.

Okay, she can’t really feed herself. But if the bottle isn’t too full, she can (usually) hold it on her own. She likes pulling it out of her mouth and sticking it back in. What fun!

Passport!

That’s right, Riley is on her way to becoming a world traveler. If she doesn’t eat her passport first! We had to wait until she started smiling socially (and we could capture a smile on “film”) before applying. 6-8 weeks (+2 weeks of obligatory slowness) later, she’s official!

Mmm, tasty:
