Maybe…

Riley’s imagination is starting to grow and she’s started playing “pretend” a lot. She likes to pretend that the bathroom by our bedroom is Boston (I think she spends a lot of time in there when she and Sage are getting ready in the morning) and she tells me to be grandma and Sage to be grandpa and says that she is Eric (my little brother). Or sometimes she pretends to be Taylor and tells us to be her daycare teacher Lucy.

It’s fun to watch her thinking hard about things. Like today we had a picnic dinner on the UCLA campus by the fountain and there was a huge flag pole with no flag on it. Riley was perplexed about where the flag could be… “Maybe it’s broken and they took it down… or maybe it turned into a tree… or maybe it broke and then turned into a dog… or maybe the wind blew it away…” a few minutes would pass and Sage and I would move onto a new topic, then suddenly Riley would break in with “maybe the flag fell down.” Later when we were trying to leave Riley was still trying to figure it out, “maybe the flag got lost?”

The great thing about pretend is it means she can be entertained without toys for a while. On the airplane flying back from Boston we pretended there were rolly pollies and worms and turtles and frogs all over the floor and seats. She got really into it and was screaming and laughing. pretty funny.

Who needs tv when you have a vivid imagination… and know how to use it.

(p.s. pictures aren’t working right now, but when they’re fixed I’ll add some to this post. until then, just pretend…)
